Introduction
Shandong University School of Medicine, as the main body of former Shandong Medical University, is one of the earliest medical schools in our country, with a long history dating back to Medical School of Cheeloo University founded in 1911. In 1952 Medical School of Cheeloo University, Shandong Provincial Medical College and East China Norman Bethune Medical College were united as Shandong Medical College and was renamed as Shandong Medical University in 1985. In July 2000, with the merge of Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology, the Department of Preclinical Medicine and the Department of Clinical Medicine of former Shandong Medical University were combined into the present School of Medicine.
Over the past 100 years, the School of Medicine has fostered more than 30,000 outstanding talents and assembled a large number of celebrated experts and scholars enjoying both national and international prestige. Among them are Professor Jiang Qing, You Jajun, Zhao Changlin, Lan Xinchun, Sun Hongquan, Gong Naiquan, Zhang Huiquan, Li Zuanwen, SuYingkuan, and Academician Zhou Tingchong, Huang Cuifen, Hong Tao, ZhangYun and Xie Lixin. They are the founders and pioneers of related disciplines of medicine in our country.
The school has 27 preclinical and clinical research institutes, 13 teaching labs, 2 affiliated hospitals, 5 teaching hospitals and 7 training hospitals. There are 934 preclinical and clinical teaching staff members, among whom are 335 professors, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 specially invited professor by "Cheung Kong Scholar Award Program'', 1 winner of National Outstanding Youth Foundation, 2 members of the first and second levels of national "Hundred, Thousand and Million Talents Project", 1 member of " New Century Outstanding Talents Supporting Program", 1 specially invited professor of " Taishan Scholars Construction Project" of Shandong Province, 1 tutor of "100 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertations", 1 teaching celebrity of Shandong Province, 148 PhD tutors and 589 M.S. tutors.
The School of Medicine attaches great importance to disciplinary development. It owns 4 ministerial and provincial key research labs (Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Experimental Teratology, Key Laboratory of Ministries of Education and Public Health for Cardiovascular Remodeling and Function Research, Key Laboratory of Ministry of Public Health for Otolaryngology and Key Laboratory of National Administrative Bureau of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Shandong Province for Blood Diseases). It also has 3 provincial key disciplines (Human Anatomy and Histology & Embryology, Internal Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics), 26 key disciplines of Shandong Province. Almost all disciplines in the Medical School, including the Preclinical Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Biology and Biomedical Engineering, have the ability to recruit Ph.D candidates and Postdoctoral Research Fellows.
Training qualified personnel is the focus of the School of Medicine. The school offers five-year undergraduate program in clinical medicine. In 1979 it started a six-year undergraduate program in clinical medicine (whose instruction is mainly given in English). In 1988 it became one of the earliest medical schools experimenting with a seven-year program in clinical medicine, which integrated the training of undergraduates into that of postgraduates. In 2002 a six-year program in medical image was opened. Now there are 2393 fulltime undergraduates, among whom 1221 are studying the seven-year program. The school¡¯s annual enrollment is about 400. There are 559 PhD students and 1290 M.S. students. Medical School began to recruit international student in 2002. Now there are 182 overseas students studying medicine. The school provides preclinical and clinical courses not only to medical school students but also to students of the Schools of Dentistry, Public Health, Nursing and Pharmacy. During the past five years, the school has won 1 National Award and 8 Provincial Awards for Achievement in Teaching, and finished the writing of 13 national textbooks projected by the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Education.
In the past five years, the School of Medicine has taken on 783 research projects of all types, such as National "973" and "863" programs, National Key Scientific and Technological Research Programs, National Outstanding Youth Foundation and National Natural Science Foundation. It has also won 169 scientific and technological awards at national, ministerial and provincial levels. Nearly 7000 essays have been published in national and international academic periodicals, like Nature Genetics, Cell and Blood. The favorable development of scientific research has laid a solid foundation for the school to transform from teaching-and-research-oriented institution to research-oriented institution. In order to strengthen international cooperation and exchange, the School of Medicine has established the relationship in technological cooperation, academic exchange, collaboration in research and exchange of visiting scholars with Medical Schools of Kentucky University of the U.S., Utah University of the U.S., Pennsylvania University of the U.S., Leiden University of Holland, Queensland University of Australia, Sydney University and Wakayama Medical University of Japan, Karolinska Institute of Sweden and Baylor Medical College of the U.S.
In the new century, the School of Medicine is ready to carry on the past and open a way for future. Adhering to Cheeloo University¡¯s good tradition of being pragmatic and seeking the truth, developing the spirit of dedication, taking advantage of academic disciplines of the comprehensive university, all the staff will continue to make the school one of the first-class medical schools in the country and recognized internationally for its high level of research.
